Camera Test: Xiaomi Pocophone NFC vs iPhone 11 Pro Max

Xiaomi Pocophone X3 NFC
Camera Shootout

This phone got sold out in 20 minutes after launching in Shopee in the Philippines!
A lot of people have been raving about the Pocophone X3. Some even say that it is 2020's flagship smartphone killer.

With 64 megapixels on its main camera, we were curious how it will perform against the 12 megapixel iPhone 11 Pro Max!

We took a short trip to Tagaytay and the Magno Twin Couples, Hazel and MJ, Heidi and MM, and Janna May helped us do this camera shootout between Xiaomi's Pocophone X3 and iPhone 11 Pro Max. We tested the photo and video feature of both phones so if you also want to see how the video camera test looks like, have a look at the video shootout below or read along for the photo samples.

Let's have a closer look at Pocophone X3's camera! All of the photos below were are straight out of the camera and went through no post processing at all.

Main Camera

Pocophone X3 has a 64 megapixel Sony main camera sensor while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has 12 megapixel sensor.

As you can see, the clouds in the background is overexposed. Unfortunately, lowering the exposure to bring definition to the sky underexposed MJ Magno.

The same thing happened to the sky when we took this photo of Janna May.

The photo quality of the Pocophone X3 is great especially for social media use but we wish it had better exposure compensation so the photos could benefit on that 64 megapixel sensor.

The Pocophone X3 struggled focusing on complicated subjects just like in this situation when Ioanna's hair is blown over her face.

By this time, you have probably noticed that Pocophone X3's main camera is slightly wider than the usual.

For its price, the images came out great.

Portrait Mode

Pocophone X3 can have good foreground and background separation in its portrait mode.

Thanks to the dedicated 2-megapixel depth sensor you will enjoy good edge detection that results to natural looking background blur on your portrait photos of any subject other than people's faces.

Both the Pocophone X3 and iPhone 11 Pro Max allows you to adjust the level of blur before and after shooting.

In this portrait shot of Heidi and MM, the Pocophone X3 had a hard time detecting the edges.

We wanted to have a more dramatic blur than what you can see in the photo. However, Pocophone X3's edge detection isn't always accurate and had problems applying natural blur on the trees.

Whenever we try to apply more blur, there were patches in the trees that became more obvious so we had no choice to keep the blurriness at this level.

Meanwhile, in this portrait shot of MJ and Hazel, the Pocophone X3 was able to detect the edges better and the background was entirely blurred.

We still couldn't apply a dramatic blur because the Pocophone X3 has failed to blur the space between MJ and Hazel and the blur looks really fake.

MJ and Hazel's orange and pink hair made us realize that the photos from the Pocophone X3 were a little saturated than they really looked like.

Even though the portrait mode did better in this photo of us, the Pocophone X3 still had problems with edge detection and failed to apply a natural focus roll off so we couldn't apply a heavy, dramatic blur.

For its price, the inconsistency of the feature isn't that bad. However, the main camera's portrait mode ate up 30MB of storage space.

Front Camera
Pocophone X3 has a 20 megapixel sensor while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has 12 megapixels.

Pocophone X3 takes mirror selfies by default.

The portrait mode isn't as competitive in the front camera but captures enough detail.

Pocophone X3's portrait mode is software-based, so it struggles detecting complicated edges like loose hairs.

Despite turning off the skin smoothing effect,  Pocophone X3's selfie processing still smoothed areas of Hazel and MJ's faces.

Conclusion

The Pocophone X3 captured good images provided that the light is good.

Does the impressive sounding camera specifications live up to the hype?
It's definitely not close to what a 64 megapixel camera would deliver but it does offer so much value for its price.

The Pocophone X3 is great for images to be shared to social media as the photos would barely need any editing or post-processing.
